Hambela Buliye — Guji, Ethiopia
Overview
A high-altitude Guji natural from Hambela Buliye, sourced from a dedicated dry-process site run by Kedir and Esmael Hassan, who also operate the nearby Hambela Dabaye station. It's earned a reputation for delivering fruit-forward naturals with beautiful clarity in the cup, harvest after harvest.
Origin & Farm Notes
Hambela Buliye sits at 2,150–2,200 masl in the Kebele Dari Bishan Fugu area of the Guji Zone. The station works with roughly 200 registered smallholder farmers from the surrounding kebeles, alongside coffee from its own nearby Buliye farm. Because the site processes only naturals, it isn't tied to a water source — which lets it sit high in the mountains, well above where a typical washing station could operate. Drying here tends to run long, often 3–4 weeks, due to limited direct sun on the raised beds — a slower process that rewards patience with a cleaner, more even dry.
Processing & Quality
Fully dry-processed on raised beds, with cherries left to dry to a deep purple before milling. The extended drying window and careful bed management are central to what makes this lot work — slow, even drying builds the fruit character without tipping into funk or over-fermentation.
What to Expect
A vivid, layered Guji natural — think ripe stone fruit, berry, and citrus, with a syrupy sweetness and a bright, winey edge that shows up as the cup cools. Notes of tangerine, blackberry, cantaloupe, and a touch of lychee, finishing with a lightly spiced, fruited aftertaste. Roasted 'Expressive-Light' to bring out the fruit clarity — City to Full City range.
