Buku Abel — Guji, Ethiopia

Overview

A high‑altitude Guji coffee from Buku Abel (Guji Zone), produced by smallholder Guji Oromo farmers and processed at a family‑run, privately owned station we’ve sourced from in prior years—purchased from for the first time this harvest.

Origin & Farm Notes

Buku Abel sits in very high elevation terrain (2,100–2,300 masl) where coffee farming has been part of local culture for generations. Guji coffees are distinct from Yirgacheffe and Sidamo—geographically, culturally, and in the cup—while still carrying Ethiopia’s hallmark aromatics. In natural-process coffees from this region, that often presents as fruit-forward, juicy, and highly aromatic, with clarity when processing is disciplined.

This station works with several hundred smallholder farmers in surrounding villages and also processes coffee from their own farm. We've sourced three standout coffees this season; Buku Abel is one that best exemplifies the aromatic fruit range Guji can deliver.

Processing & Quality

Defect sorting here is exceptional and directly impacts cup cleanliness and uniformity. Unripe cherry is removed at intake through water flotation and hand sorting, with additional selection continuing on drying tables over 2–3 weeks. Removing unripe fruit is a key step in achieving a clean, consistent cup.

What to Expect

A Guji natural built on aromatics, fruit saturation, and a clean finish—driven by high elevation and rigorous sorting rather than additional experimental fermentation.  A beautiful natural and classic Ethiopian. Roasted 'Expressive-Light', to a universally easy to extract, City. Good for Espresso.
